LIIVING IN NIGERIA- YUSUF YUSUF AKINPELU

It’s another day again to listen to some Nigerians talk about their well-being living in the country. Today, with so much joy, we have Yusuf Akinpelu who is living in Osun State, Nigeria and he is school teacher, content writer and a speaker. So with no further delay, let’s have a chat with our guest, Yusuf.

1. What are the biggest challenges Nigeria faces today, and how do you think they can be addressed?

ANSWER: Nigeria’s two biggest challenges today are corruption and the lack of investment in the youth population. Corruption has infiltrated every sector from politics to education and these make it difficult to get things done without bribery. It is now so normalized that those who refuse to engage in it are seen as naive. Public funds meant for development are looted at multiple levels thereby weakening infrastructure, education and healthcare systems. Without strong political will, accountability and transparency, corruption will continue to hinder Nigeria’s progress. The government must set an example by prosecuting corrupt officials, ensure public spending transparency and strengthen anti-corruption agencies. The second challenge is underinvestment in the youth. With over 60% of the population under 30, Nigeria has a huge potential workforce yet many young people face unemployment or lack the skills to compete globally. Instead of waiting for government jobs that may never come, Nigeria should prioritize non-politicized skill acquisition programme by sponsoring young talents for global training with a structured return policy and public-private partnerships to create job opportunities. Countries like Germany and India have successfully linked youth training to industrial needs. This model is what Nigeria can adopt.

Tackling these issues requires political commitment, open governance and a shift toward youth-driven economic development. If corruption is reduced and young Nigerians are empowered with the right skills and opportunities, the country can make its full potential for sustainable growth.

2. In what ways has the Nigerian economy evolved in recent years, and what are the emerging opportunities?

ANSWER: In recent years, particularly under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, the Nigerian economy has taken a new direction; one that has brought hardship to many Nigerians due to the sudden and unexpected nature of economic reforms. Since assuming office in May 2023, President Tinubu’s administration has implemented major policy shifts that included the removal of fuel subsidies which, while intended to free up funds for infrastructure development has led to a sharp increase in fuel prices and a subsequent rise in the cost of living. Additionally, the unification of exchange rates, aimed at stabilizing the naira has contributed to inflation and reduced purchasing power. In spite of these challenges, Tinubu has set an ambitious goal to grow Nigeria’s economy from $362 billion to $1 trillion by 2030. However, the real concern is ensuring that when the benefits of these policies materialize, they reach the people enduring the current hardships not just those who have historically profited from public resources. While these reforms present emerging opportunities, the key to benefiting from them lies in adequate preparation. Local businesses stand to gain especially as farmers across the country are already seeing increased prosperity under these policies. Similarly, local manufacturers and tech entrepreneurs must equip themselves with relevant skills to take advantage of the changing economic landscape. More importantly, Nigeria’s youth must shift away from a reliance on handouts and focus on skill acquisition rather than depending solely on academic certificates. If these economic reforms take shape as promised only those who are prepared will reap the rewards.

3. How has the Nigerian entertainment industry, especially Nollywood and Afrobeats, impacted global perception of Nigeria?

ANSWER: Nigeria’s entertainment industry through Nollywood and Afrobeats has reshaped the global perception of African music and cinema. It has positioned Nigeria as a cultural powerhouse with movies like Seven Doors by Femi Adebayo, Elesin Oba and the likes. The rise of Afrobeats on international stages has transformed the rhythm and consumption of African music worldwide. This has made Nigerian artists household names across continents. Without the influence of Nigeria’s vibrant entertainment sector, Africa’s presence in major galas, award shows and global music festivals would have been next to nothing. From Burna Boy, Davido and Wizkid to Asake and many others, Nigerian artists continue to break records, sell out arenas and win prestigious awards, putting African music at the forefront of global pop culture. Similarly, Nollywood’s expansion through streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime has introduced Nigerian storytelling to global audiences, and this has seen an increase in taste and demand for African narratives. These achievements have not only boosted Nigeria’s soft power but have also shifted global perceptions of the country from one dominated by discussions of corruption and economic struggles to one recognized for its artistic excellence, resilience and cultural influence. The entertainment industry’s success is now a major driver of Nigeria’s global reputation by proving that beyond its challenges, the country is a hub of creativity, culture and arts.

4. How do you think the education system in Nigeria can be improved to better serve the next generation?

ANSWER: The Nigerian education system in many public universities remains largely outdated with little innovation in teaching methods. It is shocking to see that some universities still use the same lecture notes and teaching styles from decades ago. For instance, I recently came across a 100-level course note that was almost identical to what I used during my undergraduate years. This shows the lack of progress in curriculum development. To better serve the next generation, our education system must evolve by incorporating modern teaching methodologies, practical skill development and industrial training. Many graduates struggle to apply what they learned in school because education remains largely theoretical except in professional fields. Practical exposure, internships and learning should be prioritised to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application. Additionally, Nigeria needs to revise its curriculum by scrapping outdated courses and integrating programmes that suit with global trends and emerging industries. Instead of producing graduates with degrees that have little real-world experiences, the focus should shift to tech-driven skills, entrepreneurship and innovative problem-solving approaches. A few private universities are already adapting to these changes but the public education system must follow suit if Nigeria hopes to equip the next generation for the future.

5. Which Nigerian dish would you recommend to someone visiting Nigeria for the first time?

ANSWER: Without a doubt, I would highly recommend Amala and Ewedu Soup paired with goat meat (Ogunfe) or catfish (Eja Panla). This dish is not just a meal, it is an experience that embodies the rich flavors and cultural heritage of Nigeria. This Yoruba delicacy has now gained global recognition with Nigerian restaurants worldwide introducing it to new audiences. If you truly want to savour the taste of Nigeria, Amala and Ewedu is a must-try.

6. What’s a uniquely Nigerian habit that most outsiders wouldn’t expect?

ANSWER: One uniquely Nigerian habit that most outsiders wouldn’t expect is the culture of “haggling” (bargaining) for almost everything, not just in markets but even in formal settings. In Nigeria, the first price is never the final price and negotiating is almost a national sport. Whether it’s buying food in an open market, hiring a service or even booking an apartment, Nigerians instinctively know that the real price is hidden behind the initial offer.

7. If Nigeria had an official national dance, what would it be and why?

ANSWER: Zanku which stands for “Zlatan Abeg No Kill Us” is a highly energetic and rhythmic dance that has taken Nigeria and the world by storm. It represents the vibrant, expressive and resilient spirit of Nigerians. The dance which involves fast leg movements, stylish hops and rhythmic stomping is widely embraced across different age groups and regions, making it a unifying cultural symbol. Beyond its popularity, Zanku shows the joy and creativity of Nigerian street culture just like its predecessors Shaku Shaku, Azonto and Alanta. It has become a staple in music videos, parties and even international performances.

8. If you could invite three famous Nigerians (alive or historical) to a dinner party, who would they be?

ANSWER: Firstly, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa, secondly, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello and lastly, Alhaji Haruna Ishola

9. How would you describe the religious system in Nigeria, and how has Christianity for one played a role in the development of the nation?

ANAWER: As a Muslim, I wont like discussing religious issues at a platform like this especially at this moment when some Christians are going against the extension of Shari’ah to the South Western part of the country. Though, there has been Shari’ah in this part for many years, they should not be against things that are constitutional and practical in all advanced countries of the world particularly in a country like the United Kingdom which is always used a yardstick to measure Nigeria’s progress.

10. Nigerians are known to be survivalists no matter how tough the economy is. What are some of those survival modes Nigerians indulge in and how sustainable would you say they are?

ANSWER: Nigerians are known for their resilience and adaptability, finding ways to survive and thrive even in the face of economic hardships. One of the most common survival modes is the deep reliance in God and religion. Many Nigerians believe that “God will provide” and this belief helps them endure difficult times with optimism. However, this faith has also been exploited by political and religious leaders who sometimes use religion as a tool to pacify the masses rather than push for structural change and good governance. Beyond faith, hustle culture is another defining survival strategy. Nigerians are natural entrepreneurs by engaging in multiple side hustles to make ends meet. From street trading, online businesses, freelancing and small-scale farming to more unconventional means like betting, crypto trading and informal financial schemes, Nigerians do whatever it takes to survive. While some of these ventures are sustainable, others, like Ponzi schemes and unregulated investments often collapse and leave many in worse financial situations. Another key survival strategy is the strong sense of community and networking. Nigerians rely heavily on family, friends and social connections for financial and emotional support. It is common to see people crowdfunding for emergencies, sharing business opportunities or engaging in cooperative savings (ajo or esusu) to stay afloat. This communal support system is deeply rooted in Nigerian culture and has proven to be a more sustainable way to navigate economic difficulties. However, while these survival tactics help Nigerians get by, they do not address the root causes of the economic struggles. True sustainability lies in demanding better governance, implementing policies that support small businesses, investing in education and creating an enabling environment for economic growth. Nigerians are survivors but they deserve more than just survival. They deserve a system that allows them to thrive.

Thank you so much, Yusuf for taking time to talk to us today.

And there you have it, we can only hope that the voice of Nigerians get to be heard and good things begins to happen for good in the country. Please us continue to pray for the country. Let’s not give up but hope for a better tomorrow.

Thank you our dear readers, God bless you.
